Hello my lovely friends! Today I want to share something very special with you. You will not only have the opportunity to peak into this colorful boho chic nursery….but you will meet my oldest son and his beautiful bride Elyse…..as this nursery is the perfectly feathered nest of my fourth grandchild who is to be born on the very day that I release this blog to all of you!
Introducing…….Blake and Elyse Johnson
(Thank you to the talented Jenn Brookover Photogrpahy for their gorgeous maternity/belly photos!!!)
They are welcoming Kinsey Blake into this world on the very day this blog is published….4/30/17….and have been so kind to allow me document and share our journey in preparing this room as a family (and trust me…it was a team/family effort)!!!
Momma-to-be Elyse is precious. She is more of the quiet-reserved type….and seems to be more comfortable expressing herself with her fashion and home decor! She LOVES bright and happy colors (insert me loving her instantly for that very reason) and her style reflects this. She knew exactly what she wanted for Kinsey’s room! Now let me mention that Elyse works for the company Caden Lane, a very well known designer brand that specializes in whimsical crib bedding and nursery decor. Uhhhhh….hello….how awesome is that??? So she was able to piece together EXACTLY what she wanted from the cream of the crop! And that Bratt Decor crib!!!! It was a GIFT from Elyse’s Aunt Tiffany and Uncle Bub ….and is dripping with style in its elegant pewter metallic finish. And I have to tell you that prego momma and long-time family friend Luly put that crib together all by themselves while Blake was out of town! Girl power!!!!
Once her bedding selections were made we began tossing ideas around for wall color. She decided soft gray walls with a horizontal magenta stripe as the accent wall…..and a soft mint (almost a washed out aqua) for the ceiling. (All paint colors and products will be listed in my Shop section below for your shopping convenience),
Elyse’s mom (aka Glam…lol)….and Elyse got busy with the gray paint while I began measuring and taping off for the magenta stripes. We left the mint ceiling paint for Blake! Painting ceilings is NOT my gig!! We completed the entire four walls in just a few hours. Once this was done we were ready to roll on all projects! I am not going to go into detail about each project as I can blog to you about those later. This is just a visual tour of a dreamy boho chic baby nursery that is so full of detail that it needs to be enjoyed by all!
We chose black and white to anchor all the bright colors…and used pops of it in every design element. So let’s start with this rug……seriously my kinda rug! I was going to buy a designer rug from somewhere like Bazaar Velvet but I decided to buy a cheap rug to begin with. I’ll probably get her a designer rug once she’s older and therefore, less likely to ruin it!! I use XOXO way too much in life as it is…and then we found this! I’ll never forget…Elyse was driving…I was the passenger and it went something like this….”so Elyse, have you found a rug yet”….”no….not yet”…..Tracey googles black and white rugs and this one pops up….”omg E…you are going to die!!! LOOK at this rug”….Tracey shows her the picture (while she’s driving ….super bad GIGI..major no-no)…..”oh no way!!!! no way!!!! That is it! I’m ordering that rug”!!! Because did ya’ll notice the bed sheet on the crib is XOXO’s????? Meant to be!
(PS – That black and white striped Ju-Ju-Be Diaper bag is found here.)
If you look closely at the picture above you will see a beautiful patchwork quilt hanging over the crib rail. Elyse’s grandmother, Meme, made this quilt with her two talented hands….using some of the extra Caden Lane fabric and other fabrics that Elyse wanted to include. What a wonderful keepsake for baby Kinsey!
So lets talk about those curtains!!! They are simple and classy…yet the touch of fluffy ball trim gives that whimsical feeling that the entire room has! I made the curtains myself….without sewing!!! I do NOT sew….I am not MEME! LOL! I’ll share this FANCY curtain making technique with you on another blog…later! (ps…the curtains came to me in a dream….as many of my design ideas do)
And let’s not talk about those flowers!! I made these three….and eleven more for another client….and I have retired in the flower making business!!! Nope! Not my thing! But they look good!!!!!
The next BLACK element in the room is that HUGE wall feature above the crib…..and I mean HUGE! Isn’t it amazing??? Is that ok for me to say since I am the one who made it??? Well I love it….like a lot….and I want to do more!!!! They are available in my shop for customization. Elyse and her mom found a saying that they both really liked…and asked me to use it on the feature piece. I was only asked to make the base color black. The rest just came to me as I began to paint. It was a surprise for Elyse….and she was brought to tears when she saw it! That just pleases me “to no end” (that was a saying my mom always used….I miss my mom…and wish she were here to witness all of this in person). I will document this cable spool project for you later. But I will say that I love its rawness and distressed goodness….keeping the room from being too glossy and accentuating the boho of “boho-chic” (which to me means a sort of FANCY boho…LOL)! And a big thank you to Pappi and Blake for BOLTING that thing to the wall for life….so no comments about it not being safe! It’s not going anywhere!!!
Moving over to the opposite side of the room is a gorgeous upcycled dresser. Blake and Elyse already owned this dresser and thought it was the perfect size for the room…but they did not like the finish it had. So I got busy with my paints and texture and stencils and made the raised crocodile drawer fronts for added interest. You can check out my tutorial on how to obtain this exact look here. I chose a dark charcoal washed look for the dresser….again in an effort to keep the room from becoming too glossy….and adding just a touch of organic feel to it. And then just like a cherry on a sundae….Elyse had picked each and every knob for the drawers. They are a perfect combination of color and funk and whimsy!
So how about this crazy diaper changing area????? Baby Kinsey better love color!!! LOL! She sure has a lot to look at! That hot magenta mirror to start with! We used an orphaned mirror that I had in storage….slapped on a few coats of the magenta paint that we used on the stripes….and BAM! Statement piece!!! The changing pad cover and diaper baskets are available at Caden Lane. That precious little outfit is so fitting for my grandchild as it states “I’m so FANCY”….and trust me…she will be! The gorgeous baby book was custom ordered from Nursery Couture where you can choose monogram, fabrics and ribbon.
*******OHHHHH…MYYYYYY…..GOSHHHHH!!! ….NEW ALERT….. I’m writing this blog and zoomed in on the picture of the changing area that I am describing….and there is a baby in the mirror reflection on the floor!!!!! LOLOL! I had Harlow…..grandbaby #3 with me the day I took these photos and am just now seeing her in this picture! Oh the life of a grandma blogger! Ok…perfect time to invite you to check out Harlow’s nursery design blog here! Back to original programming…**********
And then there is that fabulous floral mobile!!! Elyse and her mom made this DIY mobile themselves attaching flowers, crystals, feathers and little puffs of tulle to a wreath and hanging it from the ceiling with matching ribbon. If DIY is not your thing….I offer this same style mobile in my shop and you can find them here.
For some reason I failed to get a very good photo of the giant dreamcatcher that I made. It is in the background of this same photo…behind Glam’s gorgeous mobile. I have not decided if I want to offer these in my shop just yet….as it was a TON of work….but so worth it for Kinsey’s room. It is loaded with hanging ribbons and crystals and feathers and ricrac and ball-ball trim that you can see in the photo below….
Elyse chose a crushed velvet charcoal gray chair (similar to this one here) that is super comfy and perfect for late night feedings and snuggles. The beautiful monogrammed minky blanket with the giant satin magenta ruffle was given to them by Blake’s grandmother, Nini, and can be purchased from Caden Lane.
If we back up the camera a bit you get a good view of the ceiling and chandelier! How gorgeous is a black chandelier??? I have two in my own home…and they add such funk and drama!
You can also see in this photo…..the wreath made by Glam for the bedroom door. It includes black and white stripes, a polka-dotted K, and a touch of leopard…..’cuz all girls need a little leopard!!!!
When you first enter the nursery you are greeted with the “hello world” sign ….a gift from Kinsey’s Aunt Tiffany and Uncle Brody. When you round the corner…we hung a small stack of simple shelves that will display keepsake type items over the next few years. And above the closet door we placed a simple DIY arrow that I made and trimmed out in “ball-ball” trim of course!!!!
You can check out my tutorial on how I made this book stack table here. It was a super fun and fulfilling project that anyone can do with furniture stamps! I also made the framed inspirational quote that sits on the table…..and it was signed by each and every person that attended Elyse’s crazy successful baby shower!!!! She requested this as it makes a wonderful keepsake for baby!
WHEW! See what I mean when I said it took a team/family effort to bring Elyse’s vision to a reality? But it was worth every minute and we built lasting memories in the process!
So here they are again….just the two of them….about to be three!
(Photograph by Jenn Brookover in San Antonio)
Their lives will be forever changed!!! I have no doubt that the little girl that will be wearing this outfit….
will be Wild and Free…..
and they will be wishing the signs they chose for her colorful boho chic room said things like…..”be still my child”….or “sleep long and hard my child”…..LOL!!! You know I’m right!!!
Thank you both for allowing us into your home…..and sharing this beautiful space with us. Kinsey Blake is blessed beyond measure to have the two of you as her parents! Now let’s have a baby!!!!!!
