This floral ombre china cabinet is not a typical finish….or color palette for me…….and I like it!

I’ve had this dainty china hutch in my inventory for probably six months. I was waiting for just the right client to come along….or maybe I was just secretly wishing I could keep it for myself. I really love this era and style….and I wanted to take it a maximum whimsy style! But that isn’t what happened at all!

It was filthy! It had years of grime and oil and a VERY musty smell. So I hit it hard with White Lightning by Dixie Belle….and that took care of that! Check out those paper towels below! I then coated the entire piece in BOSS Clear…..knowing without a doubt that it would have serious bleed through!

I used FIVE colors on the organic “non-blended” drippy ombre/color wash finish (longest finish name I’ve ever come up with…lol!). I started with Apricot….then proceeded with Savannah Mist, Blueberry, Holy Guacamole and ended with Collard Greens.

I did experience bleed through a bit….just in the Apricot…which is typical for pieces from this era and light paints. I simply applied one more coat of BOSS clear over the already painted Apricot….and then applied Apricot once more! And that did the trick!!

Watch my YouTube video HERE to see how I created this ombre effect.

I also have a shortened (under 10 minute) version HERE for my painting friend who might be short on time…

You can see that drippy color washed finish here on the side. Its a VERY easy technique that only requires a misting bottle at your side while you paint! Try out my Ombre Color Wash Tutorial for details instructions HERE! It’s really simple…

The photo above shows off the highlighting that I did using a sixth color…..Terracotta. I used it as a glaze over the entire Apricot coat…..and then wiped back the excess….leaving the deep rust color in the crevices of the carvings. I also introduced Dixie Dirt to the piece. I used the color Earth to add that old work aged shaded look. Its great for adding depth without being too overpowering.

And there is that Terracotta! Isn’t it gorgeous on the inside??? I need to say that the furniture transfer on the bottom….Roses and Rouge by Redesign with Prima was my inspiration for this piece. I knew as soon as I saw it that I would use it on this piece. And I knew I’d be pulling every single color from it to use on one piece of furniture! This was my first time using Terracottah!

It was also my first time to use Holy Guacamole and Collard Greens…..and I will be looking for every opportunity to use them again! I do not usually enjoy painting with greens….but Holy Guacamole…..I love them!!!

I trimmed out specific areas of accent with my favorite little bottle of gold paint by Liquid Leaf. (and yes….a small part of the foot is missing)

I sealed this piece with Dixie Belle Easy Peasy Spray Wax…..along with the Clear Coat in Flat over the Roses and Rouge Transfer.

Its such a dainty and romantic piece now! I hope it finds its forever home with someone who loves it as much as I do!

Wow you. I’m on pintrest a lot. I want and dream that I can do some of what I’ve seen. You’re work of art transition is THE most beautiful I’ve seen ever. I want to do this but I think at 58 that I won’t have time to learn or create what you have
    Thank you.
