Greek Key Headboard…
Do you love a good “thrift flip”? I’ve got one for you!
My thrift find…
I found this full sized headboard at my local Goodwill….. for fifteen dollars! The price reflects the quality….. as its mostly molded plastic. Did you know that a lot of vintage furniture that has lots of carvings and moldings are NOT wood? The only wood on this headboard are the two side post and the supportive cross bar. The headboard itself is plastic. But honestly…… that makes this project even more fun for me! I love taking something that most would toss aside…. and make it into something beautiful! And headboards just lean against a wall and truly don’t need to be made from quality materials!
Prep & Paint…
I began cleaning with White Lightning and rinsing with water. Because this piece is actually plastic….. I prepped my surface with Slick Stick. Slick Stick allows you to paint on slick surfaces such as plastic, laminate, metal, glass, formica, tile, etc. It is important that you paint a single coat and let dry for at least 8-12 hours. Repeat with a second coat and let dry a few hours. I chose the Silk Line of paint by Dixie Belle as it doesn’t require a top coat once done and I’m all about eliminating a step in the process if I can!! For this project I used Conch (the dusty pink color), Salt Water (white) and Anchor (black).
I painted the entire piece in two coats of Conch. The paint dries quickly so once I completed the first coat I was able to immediately begin coat two!
I used Salt Water to to paint the center panels of the three sections.
Greek Key Stencil
I then chose the Greek Key Stencil to add visual interest to each panel. There is something about this stencil that reminds me of the Tory Burch brand…. and I really wanted this to have an old world hollywood/classic vibe…… so I felt the Greek Key Stencil was a great match! I simply hold the stencil in place while pouncing with the black paint in Anchor using my Oval Medium brush. I don’t shoot for perfection when stenciling….. just keep your brush at a 45 degree angle from you surface….. and use as little paint as possible and you will be pleased with your finish.
Just look how cool this looks! Lifting the Greek Key Stencil to see the results is my favorite part!
I then used Salt Water and a small 1″ artist brush to paint all the raised trim on the entire headboard. You can see here in the photo how crisp and clean this already looks! Two coats of Salt Water gave full coverage.
I really wanted the greek key design to pop more than it was so I chose to outline the inset around the stenciled panel in Anchor black. I immediately loved it and chose to also use Anchor to paint the accents at the top of each section.
Finishing up the Greek Key Headboard…
For the last enhancement……. my go-to gold! I used Gold Mousse infused with Clear top coat in Satin (mixing the two to a paint consistency) just nine small elements on the headboard. I didn’t want to overpower the design. I just wanted to add a subtle touch of glam. I think it’s perfect!!!
No top coat was needed…. as Silk has a built in protective top coat! Yay!!!
I call this a successful thrift flip…. how about you? When you can make a $15 headboard look this good….. who cares if it’s plastic?
