Hi there!  Thanks for popping on!  I won’t keep you long today….this is a simple share…as it is a simple project!  Simple….with a BIG impact on a room!

I am always looking for unusual items to make into something amazing!  I realize cable spools of all sizes have been used for years to make clocks and tables….but I’ve never seen them painted on and used as wall art!  I came across an opportunity to purchase these in bulk…and I just couldn’t pass them up!!!  I had no idea what I was going to do with them….but I knew it would NOT be a clock!!!  LOL!  I love them….but they are just way to over done and Pinterest is saturated with them.  I love the rawness of the pieces…the mix of wood and metal…and the SIZE!!!!  You all know I like IMPACT and FEATURE pieces!  Especially for baby rooms!  So I stored these for months before I finally had my first vision!  The MOON!

I chose to go with grays….as I felt this would be more acceptable in a boy’s nursery.  I’m always getting request for cool and creative things to use in boy nurseries….so the first one was geared towards a baby boy!  Here you can see a little snippet of me laying on the first bit of paint.

Once it was completely painted….I used my electric sander and went to town with it.  I wanted to make this piece look aged and raw and very farmhouse!  I love how it turned out.  The mix of rough wood and old paint and metal grommets is oddly satisfying to me.

I love the imperfection of having to paint the wording right over the exposed handles that are cut into the spool.  I only used three products on this piece!  Heirloom Traditions Paint in Repose (the gray) and Irish Cream (the white).   The paint is chalk based which makes it very open to distressing!!!    Once I had it distressed to the level I wanted….I sealed the entire piece with a layer of their Gel Wax in clear….which if you haven’t tried the new gel waxes….you really need to make that happen!!!

My next upcycled cable spool art was for a girl!!!  I know…it doesn’t seem possible to make something so huge and raw and masculine for a baby girls nursery….but we did!  Isn’t it amazing???  Completely opposite of the boy art….full of color!!!  You can see this wall art mounted above the crib in my Boho Nursery Tour here.

Again….I chose to distress the paints heavily to expose the raw wood…and blend the paint colored edges ever so slightly.  This spool is base coated with Raven….also by HTP.  I used Irish Cream (white) for the words….and the work WILD was done in Mint Julep.  The green vines and leaves were done with HTP’s Tiffany  (the aqua color).  The fuchsia pink and other flowers were done with acrylic paints that I had on hand.  I will list all paint products for both projects in my shop section below….for you DIY lovers!!!!

I love both of those cable spool ideas! Of course Kinsey’s is ideal with her room, but the “I love you to the moon & back” is such a common thing we say to our kids all through their lives and it was pictured perfectly!! Great job!!

Very nice, I just did a table for my kitchen and I am from Corning NY and would love one with Corning on it.

This post was so timely. I just get 2 spools this afternoon and like you, I didn’t want to do a clock. Thanks for the inspiration.
