Well this was a super fast and super fun project!
Playing with the Patina Paint is ALWAYS exhilarating!
You really cannot predict what your end result will be!
……. but the RUSTY MEMO HOLDER? This, we’ll see!
I’ve used this memo holder in my office for several years now…. and that gold floral just had to go!
I’ve really loved the Balloon transfers from Dixie Belle but haven’t had a custom order that they were a good fit for. There is something about the “circus” balloon that kept calling to me! But when I think of “circus”….. I prefer the vintage circus vibe. So I decided to pair the Balloon transfer with the Patina line and use them both to update my Memo holder!
Before I get carried away…
I taped off my stripes across the front inset. At this point I usually burnish my edges with the same color as the base (in this case it would be Midnight Sky). But because I was antsy to use the Patina….. I decided to dry brush my stripes using VERY little paint…. and moving quickly…. which is also a technique for minimal bleed through on the stripe edge. I used Burlap (a color I rarely use) for the stripes.
I used a heat gun to force dry the paint really well….. since transfers were next! Its best practice to allow paint to dry for several hours before applying transfers…. so do as I say not as I do! LOL!
Just cut the balloon you like from the Hot Air Balloons and Clocks Transfer from Dixie Belle. I started with the giant red striped balloon in the back center….. placing it and gently rubbing to release the transfer cover. Easy! From here I chose the tiny green one and layered it right over the red striped one! Then I added the blue stripe balloon to the left layered edge as well. Moving to the front, I added my favorite balloon…. the Circus balloon! I just continued to add balloons until I was happy. I chose to add a black and white one…. and then added the really vintage black and white ones to each side!
The transfers went on easily and this part of the project took maybe 20 minutes!
Adding the rust….
Now for the FUN!!!!
I liberally applied the Iron patina to all edges and corners in a very organic way. This first coat needs to dry fully ….. and not with a heat gun (it doesn’t work as well…trust me….I know)!
The second coat is to be applied directly over the first coat…… and while STILL WET…. spray your reactive spray of choice! I wanted full on RUST…… and this is achieved by using Iron Patina Paint and green reactive spray. This is where the memo holder becomes the RUSTY MEMO HOLDER!!
Then you wait!
Don’t touch it…. be patient!
Within a few minutes you will see changes…… but just wait!
I walked away and returned about 6 hours later and THIS!!!
Rusty crusty goodness!!!!
I couldn’t be happier!
I sprayed a protective finish with Top Coat in Satin.
This memo holder no longer goes with my new office vibe…..but I love it so much….. and am sure it is meant for someone out there! They just don’t know it yet!
