Free Ultimate Furniture Painting Guide

Teal & Green Grunge Painted Dresser

The order for this piece was a tall one!

As I sit and listen to some of my client's request....I am left with my eyes wide open and often without words....wishing I was both a mind reader AND a magician!

It's often a little like baking....mixing together many ingredients (ideas) and hoping for a tasty outcome (the final finish)!

The ingredients for this job???

.......this very traditional piece

......lots of color....but also with black and white checks....oh...and metallic gold

......make it work with my current bedroom suite (massive, rustic, dark, heavy)

.....please use teal.....and I love the ocean

Yep...that's the eyes wide open part.....

I thought long and hard about her teal request. I use the color often...but I really wanted this finish to appear lit by the sun (recalling her "love of the ocean"). I remembered a twin bed and dresser that I did about 5 years ago....and how the bright green appeared from beneath the teal...and the overall look was alive with color! I've shared them with you here....

I knew I wanted to do an updated version of that same look.

I will not sit here and tell you this final look came easily. It was no doubt a "process" with several changes in direction.....but this FANCY GRUNGE FINISH has me feeling proud.....and satisfied....and pretty much in LOVE!

I used Multiple layers of green.....teal, aqua and bright green....to achieve this aged and almost decrepit teal.

The chest is flanked by neutral colored harlequins to tie in her existing nightstands....it was a risk...but I really feel it settles the energy of the piece.

I used a dark chocolate metallic brown to frame the drawers. This deep injection of color was necessary in order to bring in the deep color from her existing massive king size bed. I chose metallic to offer shimmer and sort of off set the grunge.

The black and white patterns bring whimsy into the finish...keeping it from being too dark and heavy!

Whimsy = Happy

Heavy on the distressing...which you do not see me do often. I chose this...in order to decrease the amount of sharp lines between patterns and color combinations.

And finally....metallic gold. As requested. And a must for Fancy Grunge!

And lastly.....the SUN! My client's love of the ocean is blatantly reflected on the top surface....proudly!

As a furniture painter......I dare you to be different! I dare you to invite new ideas into your mind! I dare you to follow the urge!
