I honestly believe that most of us have held onto those childhood or even early adulthood jewelry boxes. There is something magical about having a special place to hold your small trinkets or tiny pieces of treasured jewelry. Jewelry storage has come a long way since back in the day of “tiny ballerina dancing to music” boxes. I actually have an entire door with hooks dedicated to storing my large chunky bling! Heck…my sister-in-law has an entire wall dedicated to her baubles! But those treasured tinies still need a place to be safely stored. So pull them out of hiding….let me help to inspire you…..and let’s dress them up – vintage boho jewelry box!
I picked up this little box at Goodwill for pennies! I loved the shape and the tiny little legs. I first removed the little handles by using an eyeglass screwdriver on the tiny little screws that held them in place.
I then cleaned the surface with White Lightning (best degreaser ever and really preps for proper adhesion). I primed it with a single coat of BOSS in clear…as I planned to distress it and did not want the white or gray halo effect of the colored BOSS primers.
Once dry…..I used a finishing pad, which has 220 grit sandpaper on one side, and lightly sanded all the surfaces…making sure to expose the underlying wood on all corners and edges for a worn look. I removed the dust with a microfiber rag.
Now to embellish. I chose the Mandala Silk Screen stencil with Dixie Belle’s Gemstone Mousse in gold…..randomly and offset to serve as a backdrop for the transfers I was planning to use next. I also chose one of the trims to wrap around the edge of the box and you can see that on this back corner here.
If you haven’t used a silkscreen stencil…..I encourage you to give it a try! Would you just look at the details here? Silkscreens offer you a sharp design that you cannot get with another stencil! If you like details….you will want to add silk screen stencils to your arsenal! They come three sheets to a package….and each sheet may be used up to 10 times!! As long as you rinse immediately after use and set it aside to dry….they are reusable.
Then I chose the new transfer called Boho Soul (I love that name). I chose to build my own bouquet by cutting the transfer into individual pieces and just layering them until I had the bouquet I wanted.
I layered a bouquet on top and on the front side as well….
I mixed the feathers and floral all together…..and even dropped an additional feather around the backside!
You can see me do the design transfer application and the silk screen stencil on this vintage boho jewelry box here in a quick video demonstration.
Once your transfers have been applied….you just use that same finishing pad to lightly rub over the transfers to make sure they “become one” with the paint. At this point, you can topcoat your piece. Any topcoat works but I recommend clear spray wax or clear coat in satin. Two thin coats and this vintage boho jewelry box is done!!
