Free Ultimate Furniture Painting Guide

Wall Art to Wedding Sign

Wall art to wedding sign?? Words and phrases as wall art are a hot ticket item right now and to be honest they have been for several years! Every type of saying from "gather" to "home" to "it is well with my soul" to "this is us" can be seen on Pinterest, in Hobby Lobby and while thumbing through the latest Pottery Barn magazine. A few years ago I spent hours creating hand painted custom signs for my clients. When my painting was complete, Matt would then begin the framing process which NOT easy!! It was so much work that I opted to no longer offer custom framed signs. THEN....... I GOT SMART...... and EXCITED!

I realized I could purchase Hobby Lobby framed art/signs when they are on clearance for next to nothing..... and repaint them! This opened up all sorts of opportunity for gift giving, home decor, weddings, baby showers, and custom signs for clients in all sizes! And, to make it even easier..... Dixie Belle now offers an all-in-one paint, SILK, which allows me to paint two coats and eliminate the top protective coat! No sealer needed! I just paint, dry, paint, dry...... add words or art..... dry and DONE!

Let me share an example of this process with you:

Large (24 x 36) framed art from Hobby Lobby on clearance for $12.00.

I painted the sign with two coats of Silk in Anchor (black) and let dry.

Taped off lines where I wanted my phrases to be.

Then I wrote the words/phrases in chalk.

Using a phone app, I chose a fancy font and did my best to draw them out in chalk. I like the apps called Watermark or Rhonna.

Wall art purchased on clearance is the best time saver for framed paint washed signs for any occasion or for decoration.

I used an oil based paint pen to trace OVER the chalk words. Once the paint dried, I used a baby wipe to remove any chalk that can still be seen.

And that is it!!! Step back and look at that masterpiece!

I love this Silk Anchor (black). It is a rich velvety color that has the perfect sheen. But SILK is offered in 20 gorgeous colors that you can consider for your sign background! Lighter signs with a black paint pen would be just as beautiful!

And the best part??? I didn't have to ask Matt to build a frame!!!! Check out your local thrift shops too! They are filled with old framed art!

Just look at this beauty all dressed up in its floral garland.....welcoming guest to a gorgeous wedding! I'd hand paint these signs all day long if I could! In fact..... I have a baby shower sign to do right now! I better get busy! I hope you'll give this a try! And if you don't feel like you've got the penmanship for the hand lettering..... I've got a full tutorial on that for you! You can find it here.
