Free Ultimate Furniture Painting Guide

Adding Visual Interest: Same products...two pieces

I recently had the pleasure of working side-by-side with special guest Solly Jo Moore, the owner and creator of Wood U Bend Moldings, at my first Create Boldly 2020 painting workshop in Ft. Myers Beach, Florida. We transformed two pieces of furniture by adding visual interest.....using the same molds, paint colors, design transfer, stencil, and gilding waxes...all the while..... leading an amazing group of women step-by-step in creating their own!

Today I share with you the two LEAD pieces....before...after....and all the in between.....in hopes that YOU will be inspired to create something similar for your own home! (don't worry.....I will be "blog-bragging" over all 21 pieces created by the ladies next week!)

Our pieces were chosen for us by the host of the event....Carla Pine of Salty Dog Gallery and Gifts. She so kindly purchased the pieces for us....cleaned them with White Lightning....and primed them as we requested....one in BOSS WHITE and the other in BOSS CLEAR. We chose the two versions of primer just to showcase the differences to those in class.

In order to shorten a two-day workshop into an easy to follow guide...I am going to list the steps we took to achieve the final look.

*molds were applied to each piece creating an inset that will feature the design transfer that will be used (a video showing how to use and apply molds can be seen here). You can see the exact molds used in the shop section of this blog.

*single base coat of Blueberry applied

*single coat of Aubergine applied to the lower end of the piece on a diagonal

*single coat of Plum Crazy applied to very lowest corner of the diagonal

*each color division line was blended out using a mister bottle/paint/brush technique (this technique takes practice so do not be discouraged) ... And in case you are wondering, I really like this mister bottle by Dixie Belle.

*each piece was lightly sanded with Dixie Belle's sanding sponge....and wiped clean with a damp cloth

*the entire piece was sealed with Dixie Belle's Clear Top Coat in satin and left to dry overnight

*Stick and Style stencil roll by Redesign with Prima in Leopard was used to serve as a backdrop/accent to the planned design transfer (we used Dixie Belles Caviar for the leopard pattern...this is a very easy process and adds so much to the finish)

*Lush Floral design transfer (also by Redesign) was then used by choosing individual flowers for specific placement and layering...all within the inset created by the applied molds (making sure to nestle in nicely amongst the cheetah print)

*Best Dang Wax in Black was applied liberally to all molds as well as edges of the design transfer

*it was then wiped back using baby wipes....leaving a rich shadow to the applied areas

*the curvy chest was accented with Eternal gold gilding wax by Redesign....on all carvings and raised molds

*the rectangular chest was accented with Posh Powders gold by Wood U Bend that are not available on the market yet....but I will certainly let you know when it is!

And BOOM.....two gorgeous pieces....created by two of us....side by side....and it was SO much fun!!! I can't wait to share all the miniature versions created by the women who attended....next week!

**Side note....the curvy piece was purchased on-site by an attendee....with the proceeds being donated to the Havanese Rescue Foundation....and she planned to seal the piece once she got it home with Dixie Belle's Clear Top Coat in Satin. The boxy piece was sealed using the same top coat.... by our host Carla....and will also be sold in her store with the proceeds being donated to Ft. Myers Beach Women's Club.... which is where our event was held.

It is amazing to me how much the creation of the inset with the use of the molds changes the look of each piece entirely!
