This french country bed makeover is proof that sometimes the most meaningful furniture transformations aren't about finding something new... they're about giving a beloved piece a brand-new chapter.
This once-classic white French Country bed was reimagined with soft pink tones, playful stripes, and a timeless finish that can grow right alongside its newest owner.
But what makes this makeover truly special isn't just the paint... it's the story the bed has carried for more than a decade.

If you are a new reader, hello and welcome to the Fancy Fam! The story behind the French Country Bed Makeover
About 12 years ago, I painted this bed for my oldest daughter's best friend. She's been part of our family for so long that she feels more like family than a friend. At the time, she lived in Maryland, so after the makeover was complete, we carefully shipped the bed all the way from Texas to her home.
Back then, the bed was finished in a classic white with gold accents. It was beautiful, timeless and loved for many years.

Life moved on, as it does. The bed spent time in a guest room, then eventually found its way into storage. A marriage, a move back to Texas, and the arrival of a baby girl later, it was time for the bed to begin a new chapter.
When her little girl graduated from her nursery to a "big girl" room, she knew exactly which bed she wanted to use.
The same bed.
The one filled with memories.
The only problem? After more than a decade of use, storage and moving, it was ready for a refresh.
So she loaded it up and brought it to my studio.... and this time we painted it together.

Our process for the French Country Bed Makeover
Step 1: Clean and Prep
We gave it a thorough clean with White Lightning followed by a really good rinse.

This removed any oils or dirt that would keep the paint from adhering to the old painted finish.
Don't ever skip this step.... it is so important for a successful makeover!
Step 2: Apply Bonding Boss Primer
Even though the bed had been previously painted, we chose to apply Dixie Belle Boss Primer.
Boss helps to block potential bleed-through and gives us a fresh, reliable surface to paint over.

We applied one coat and allowed it to dry overnight.
The next day I applied a second coat, and Katie joined me after work so we could begin painting together.
Step 3: Painting the Trim
We painted the trim of the bed in two coats of my Cotton Candy custom mix. Katie tackled the headboard while I tackled the footboard.
I custom blended this pink color years ago and continue to use to often in my designs.
Step 4: Painting the Flat Panels
Rather than introducing an entirely new color, we created a second shade of pink by adding Fluff white to the original Cotton Candy color....mixing it in at a 50/50 ratio.
This created a softer pink that coordinated beautifully with the trim color.
We used this lighter shade on all of the flat panels of the bed.

Step 5: Painting the Stripes
Using a yardstick, we measured out stripes in a width that we both felt worked for this size bed.

We settled on 4" stripes and drew them out with a pink colored pencil.
We then painted in the stripes with the deeper shade of pink (the same as the trim).

The goal was to create something sweet and playful without feeling overly bright or overwhelming.
We wanted a bed that could grow with her while still feeling whimsical and fun. I think we achieved this exactly!
Step 6: Protect with Satin Top Coat
To protect the finish, we applied two coats of Dixie Belle Satin Top Coat.

This product sometimes surprises first time users because when you open the container, it looks creamy white.
Don't panic.
The white appearance is intentional.
The creamy consistency makes application easy because you can clearly see where you've already applied it. And it is thick so it doesn't drip and run the way some top coats do.
Once dry, it becomes completely clear.

It's one of my favorite protective finishes because application is simple, forgiving, and leaves behind a beautiful soft sheen that isn't too shiny and isn't completely matte.
For this bed, two coats provided the perfect amount of protection!
More Than Just a French Country Bed Makeover
The makeover itself was simple.
The meaning behind it wasn't.
There's something special about seeing a piece of furniture continue its journey through different seasons of life.

Not only was the bed transformed..... but the memories were preserved.
FAQ: French Country Bed Makeover
Do you need primer before painting a previously painted bed?
It isn't always necessary with Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint but I still highly recommend it. Bonding Boss helps prevent bleed-through and creates a reliable surface for paint adhesion.
What paint colors were used on this bed?
The bed was painted using a custom Cotton Candy pink mix, along with a lighter version created by mixing Cotton Candy and Fluff white 50/50. You can find the "recipe" for Cotton Candy paint color HERE.
How do you protect a painted bed?
Two coats of Satin Top Coat provide durable protection while maintaining a soft furniture-friendly sheen.
Can you paint over an old painted bed?
Absolutely. Proper cleaning, priming, and quality paint products make it easy to refresh an older painted finish.
How wide should stripes be on a bed?
That depends on the scale of the piece, but we found 4-inch stripes worked perfectly for this bed.
