FIVE Must-Have Supporting Products for Every Furniture Painting Project

We often talk about the stars of the show....the gorgeous paint colors, the sparkling gilding wax and the perfect top coats.

But every beautiful paint finish has a support team of not-so-glamorous products working quietly in the background.

I am sharing my favorite... the best... must have... supporting products for every furniture painting project with you - giving them the credit they deserve and why!

This special blend is available in a "ready to use" spray bottle as well as a concentrated jar of crystals that you can mix on your own.

I recommend the 8 oz jar of crystals....it will last you forever!

It's super easy to use...you just mix 2 teaspoons with water in your own spray bottle...label it....and use it before every project.

This solution is a degreaser that will cut through years of dirt and grime.  Removing grease and oils is imperative prior to painting.  Having a grease/oil free surface will set you up for a successful project!

It is not advertised as a de-glosser....but it does de-gloss!  Just spray down your piece.....scrub/brush/wipe...whatever is needed....and be mind blown at what comes off your project.

PRO TIP: Make sure to rinse a final time with just water before you begin painting.

I consider this product my workshop BFF!!!  I use this on 90% of my painting projects.  It works on plastic, glass, mirrors, wood, pottery, tile, formica, metal.....you name it....it works!

This product will block any stains that are not removable with cleaning.  It blocks bleed through from wood tannins.  It gives your slippery surfaces "tooth" for your paint to grip onto.  It blocks odors and colors.  It comes in clear, white and gray.

My favorite is gray and is what I used most often.  It seems to offer the most blocking ability.

And the clear works well to set up tooth on glass when color and bleed through blocking isn't needed.  Clear is also the best choice if you plan to wipe back or distress your paint.....as it will allow the raw wood color to be exposed.

PRO TIP: I usually paint a single coat.....leave overnight or at least six hours.  I follow with a second coat....let dry....and paint.

I spent years using a certain brush from Home Depot.  I had no idea that a specifically crafted brush, made just for using chalk mineral paint, would make such a difference in a paint finish.

Well, I am here to say I am a believer in these Dixie Belle Synthetic brushes.

They are hand crafted.  The bristles are sturdy and meant to carry the weight of heavy chalk mineral paint.  The edge of the bristles are tapered...meaning they are made to deliver the paint with a buffed out edge leaving almost no visible brush strokes.

And they are HARDY.....and last forever!

I am not nice to my brushes and I am still using my very first brushes TODAY.  I've added more to my supply over the years...but my original brushes still look great!

If you've ever been to one of my retreats.....you've used my "oldie-but-goodies" and you know!  They are well worth the investment.  My favorites are the Mini and the Flat Medium.

Chalk mineral paint dries with a rough chalky finish.  Just under that layer of roughness is a buttery smooth finish waiting to be discovered.  All you need is a light "swipe" with a sanding pad.

PRO TIP: Just one smooth "swish" until your surface has been "swooshed". LOL!  NO NEED to "sand" back and forth.

You do this swiping in between coats as well as just before applying your top coat.  This little pack of sanding pads last me forever!

The padded foam backing gives me the perfect control over my swish.  It's the strangest thing....but using a single sheet of sand paper is just not the same.  I've dug score lines into my paint finish by using sand paper but the foam backed sanding pad just doesn't do that.

You can use one pad over and over and over.  In fact....I rarely throw them away.  I have a drawer full!

AHHHHhhhhhh Scubby Soap!

My whole family loves this product.  We have one at every sink in the house.

My favorite is the orange citrus.  It has a built in sponge that allows you scrub your hands, your furniture, your brushes....whatever you need to scrub.

Srubby Soap by Dixie Belle Paint Company

I use this to clean my brushes and hands more than anything.  It is all natural....made with citrus oil and no chemicals!  It will even break up oil based paint and ink!!!  I also use this to scrub down my furniture after stripping it with any sort of wood stripper.

It just breaks down the stripping agent and it washes clean in an instant!  I then of course follow with White Lightning to remove any oils.  And finally...it smells amazing!!!  They even offer a body line for shower and bath!  I bring this to my retreats as well....and my attendees are hooked after seeing it work its magic!

One Final Look at these FIVE Must Have Supporting Products

These behind-the-scenes products aren't just optional....they are essential.  Once you add them to your workshop....you will wonder how you ever painted without them!

A thoughtful color consultation can make all the difference in a furniture painting project. It helps you choose the right tones and finishes that complement your space and reflect your personal style. Pairing that with the right supporting products ensures your final piece looks polished and professional.
