Before...

I've been looking for a second french provincial nightstand for my guest bedroom.

I found this beauty at one of my favorite little shops in town.....the Shabby Chicas.  You can follow them on Facebook and Instagram.  They post their thrifted finds throughout the week and their prices and service are incredible!

I love the elevated portion of this table.....it allowed me one more surface to paint and that always excites me!

Design Plans for the Guest Bedroom

I'm pulling the colors from my wallpaper...you may remember it from Facebook post a couple of years ago.

At that time this room was my office...but is now used as our guest room.

I need a brighter color to pop off the boxwood green wall....the current Antebellum blue nightstand becomes invisible in front of it.  You can see that nightstand in this blog HERE

Chalk-Painted Mustard Yellow Butterfly Nightstand

I began by priming the entire piece in Bonding Boss gray.

Once dry, I painted everything except the top two surfaces in Colonel Mustard Yellow

Adding Signature Stripes to Top Surfaces

The top two surfaces are painted in Fluff white with Caviar black stripes.

How to get a PERFECT STRIPE every time!

  1. Always paint your lighter color first and allow to dry very well.

  2. Tape your desired width stripes making sure to detack your tape first by sticking it onto your t-shirt or pants and peeling it off.  This keeps your tape from lifting your paint when you peel it away.

  3. Burnish your tape by applying the same coat as your base coat over the edges of the tape.

  4. Once dry, paint your stripe color and remove your tape immediately.

Blending Mustard Yellow Nightstand for a Softer Look

The blending and butterfly stamps were not recorded as I taught this in a live class.

I'd love to have you join me in Curiously Creative....our classes are full of great inspiration and learning opportunity!

I used Lemonade in the center of the drawers for the highlighted portion and I used Pine Cone around the outside portion to get that deep shadowed look.

I worked on the three color blend using multiple brushes (I highly recommend the Big Daddy and the French Tip) and water until I achieved the blend I was after.

Adding the Fun: Butterfly Stamps

I decided to go for an all over pattern on the drawer fronts on top of the blend.

I remembered I had butterfly stamps from IOD!  I've used them on many projects and they are a lot of fun!

So using two of the butterflies in different sizes......with Chocolate brown as the color.....I stamped each butterfly in place to create an all over effect!

I am thrilled with how this looks!

A Little More "Interest"

I repeated the blending process on both sides of the nightstand as well.

And just to add a little interest....I brought in a few more colors from my wall paper to enhance some of the carvings and skirtings.

I just barely kissed these areas with paint...using Plum Crazy and Florida Orange and blending them subtly using my French Tip Brush.

To finish this piece off.....I used Gold Gilding wax!

I tried not to!  LOL!

I tried to use Copper gilding wax and even Bronze....but nothing brought look I was after home......like Gold Gilding Wax!

I used it to enhance the carvings and the tiny little drawer pulls.

The entire piece is protected with Gator Hide for lasting protection.  I chose the big gun top coat because it is water resistant and this will be a bedside table....with lots of bedtime water glasses in its future!

The Finished Look: Mustard Yellow Butterfly Nightstand

Like I always say......feature furniture pieces do NOT need to be large in size!

They just need good bones, a little color......and a great idea!

I hope this inspires you to try something new...and to go make something beautiful today!

More Inspiration: Nightstands

I pulled a few nightstands from past projects that came to mind when working on this piece! I hope you can use them to draw inspiration for your upcoming project. Here are the additional designs for your inspiration:
