Blue Blended Chalk Painted Bed

It's been years since I've painted a king size bed....probably four or more! I used to paint them all the time, but over the years I have shifted toward smaller more manageable projects. Smaller pieces mean faster turn-around, less heavy lifting and easier staging!
This blue blended chalk painted bed was a bit of a homecoming for me and how great it felt to stretch out creatively over such a large surface again! It reminded me of why I fell in love with painting furniture in the first place.

If you are a new reader, hello and welcome to the Fancy Fam! With over a decade of furniture painting experience, I can honestly say that sharing my projects through this blog is still my favorite way to inspire! I've got years worth of fun and creative ways to update your home decor and furniture through paint! Why Chalk Mineral Paint?
One of the things I love about using a quality chalk mineral paint is how beautifully it adheres. Primer is really only necessary if you're concerned with or dealing with bleed through from wood tannins, pesky stains, or odor.....or adhesion issues.
This bed didn't require a primer. The surface was solid, the finish was sound and after a deep clean with white lightning to remove all dirt, grime, and degloss a bit.....I was able to dive right into the fun part - layering colors!
Design Plan: Blended Blue Chalk Mineral Painted Bed
My client is creating a subtle Alice in Wonderland themed bedroom...sort of an elegant nod to the whimsy of Wonderland.
I likely will add more detail and pattern to the nightstands and dresser....but I decided to keep the finish on the bed more refined. I wanted it to anchor the room with a blended blue finish that feels dreamy, layered, and rich without being too busy. This blue blend will tie beautifully into the many blues she'll be using in her room decor and artwork.
For this finish I simply chose three blues that worked well with each other. All three blues are soft and subtle.....not one of them too bold to play well with the others.
Knowing and using the correct painting supplies makes all the difference...

Painting and Blending with Chalk Mineral Paint
Base Coat with Antebellum Blue
I began by painting the entire bed (headboard, footboard, four posts and two bed rails) in just one coat of my "middle" blue.....Antebellum Blue.
I allowed this to fully dry overnight, as I'll be blending with a lot of water over it, and I need this to be my anchor/base to blend on.

Blending is much easier if done over a coat of chalk mineral paint vs. trying to achieve a blend directly over the original wood surface.
Blending with In The Navy and Savannah Mist
I then choose sections to work on one section at a time. I bring in both the darkest and the lightest.... blending them into the middle color.

In this case, the dark color is In the Navy and the light color is Savannah Mist.
This is a very difficult process to describe with typed words.....however I share this process on many videos on social media - Instagram and Facebook. In addition, I have this 2-hour course that combines the color blending and check pattern painting tutorials.
In my blending process, I usually keep my darker colors to the outside of my blended sections and my lightest color to the center of the blended sections....

...which gives a beautiful illusion of paint with light!

For the bed poles and any trim work, I only used the two darker blues. Antebellum as the base and then top-coated with a very wet In the Navy....
...that I wipe away while still very wet to expose the Antebellum underneath.
It offers a gorgeous layered look!

My Best Chalk Mineral Furniture Painting Tips:
⭐️ Have one brush per color of paint
⭐️ Keep a rag on hand to wipe brushes often
⭐️ Use the Big Daddy Brush for final blending of all three colors
⭐️ Use a spray or misting bottle to keep your paint wet for easy blending
The Finished Look: Blue Blended Chalk Painted Bed
To protect this gorgeous finish, I rolled on a Satin Clear Coat to the flat paneled areas on the head board, foot board, and rails. The detailed areas and poles were brush-coated. I applied three coats for a solid protective finish.

Working on this blue blended chalk painted bed reminded me of where I started..... painting large, statement pieces that transform entire rooms. I am anxious to begin the pieces that go with this bed and share those processes with you too!
So here's to blending, revisiting old favorites, and saying yes to projects that stretch us creatively.....in the best way!
