Summer Striped Makeover Challenge
The focus of this summer challenge is "fast flipping" with details!
Each creation must be:
*a tiny table
*two colors
*include stripes
This blue green sunburst and striped mini table is the 3rd in the series.
My first two tables Sunset Sugar Pink Striped Mini Table & Summer Stripe Series: "Orange You Gladys" Striped Table have very different vibes but still follow the basic "rules". If you missed it when I first created them, visit the blogs for design details and many more photos!
Before: Blue Green Sunburst & Stripe Makeover
I fell in love with this little table the moment my friends at The Shabby Chicas listed it!

It has a factory finish with faux worm wood holes. The factory finish was easy to clean using the premixed White Lightning in a spray bottle!

I just sprayed, wiped away, sprayed again with water and wiped away one last time. No wood tannins or bleed through were present on my cloth so I moved forward without a primer.
*** If you'd like to know more about how to determine if you need to use primer or not....I have a detailed video explaining this here:
But first the before...

Summer Stripe Series #3:
I chose shades of summery blues and greens for this little table.
I painted the entire table in two coats of Mint Julep which is a soft and buttery green.
Creating the Sunburst & Striped Design
Once dry, I drew on my sunburst design using a chalk pencil and a ruler.
This design is very easy.....just find your center and divide evenly as if you are cutting a pizza or a pie. I did this on both the top and bottom tier.

Using my favorite aqua blue color, The Gulf, I painted in every other pie slice. This only required one coat of paint since the two colors are so similar.
I call this look a tone-on-tone look. It's a great way to add a whimsical touch in a subtle way.

Stripes are part of this challenge as well.....so I added them using the same tone-on-tone colors, on the right and left side of all four legs.
I am really happy with the playfulness that this added.
Now for the Fun Part.....The Scallop!
I used a circle template that I had on hand....traced it onto card stock....but the circle in half and then used it to trace around as I moved it around the edges.
I then filled this in with Drop Cloth (a nice off white)....which required two coats.
I LOVE this trimmed out look!

A painted scalloped edge gives such a playful look.....and that is exactly what I was after for this little table!

This design is a new pattern for me....and I plan to add it to my regular programming!
Bending the Rules with some Gold Highlights
Adding metallic gold was not my plan....especially since my challenge was to only use two color....but I've already broken that rule...so why not!
I really wanted enhance the appliques with a color....and gold just felt right.
For the appliques, I added gold gilding wax.....using my finger....because that's the way I like to do it!
It comes in several metallic colors and you can't go wrong with any of them. Copper and Gold are my favorite!! And don't be fooled by the tiny pot...it will last you FOREVER!
I then pulled out my favorite metallic gold pen!!!! This thing is SO much fun to use! I added a thin gold line between the tone-on-tone stripes and sunburst....as well as outlining the scalloped edge!
The gold pen is another tool that is really nice to have on hand! I use it often on my smaller home decor pieces...but it also comes in handy on furniture pieces as well!
I allowed the gold to dry for several hours....and finished off the entire piece with a satin top coat.
I ALMOST went with a high gloss shine.....and maybe I will in the coming days....but for now the satin sheen it is!
The Finished Look: Blue Green Sunburst Mini Table
This style of furniture isn't for everyone.....I am aware!

Many say it is meant for children only. But I disagree. I enjoy a playful vibe infused into my day/life however I can get it.

Life in general is so serious......and a little dose of "hey....lighten up....lets have fun" can be found even in an end table!
So whether you are fond of this style on furniture or not....I hope you are inspired by the color palette....or the patterns use....or even just the painting process....no matter what colors you are using!
