A client and friend, Ms. Bonnie, reached out to me because she was headed to The Wizard of Oz show at the Las Vegas Sphere.
She'd been planning her outfit for weeks.....she had custom-made sparkly red shoes, a pair of blue gingham checked pants, and she wanted to bring it all together with a one-of-a-kind hand painted white denim jacket by ME!!! AND...she gave me complete creative freedom!

Wizard of Oz Hand Painted White Denim Jacket
I decided to design something that gave subtle nodes to The Wizard of Oz.
Yellow Brick Road
Instead of painting a literal yellow brick road, I painted yellow brick panels on each side of the back of the jacket.
This was my favorite part of the entire project. Shading and highlighting the bricks and watching them take shape was so much fun!
Just look at the bricks without shading....vs the bricks after the shading is complete. Paint really is amazing!
Emerald City
I added a swirling emerald-green background... just enough to hint at both the tornado and the Emerald City.
I think I would have enjoyed creating this blended swirl more had I done it before drawing out the legs and shoes.
PRO-TIP: If you try this at home....do your blended twister background first!
Ruby Red Slippers
And finally, I painted Dorothy's legs and those ruby-red shoes (with a peek of her blue dress showing).
As much as I love the look of the rhinestone shoes.....I must admit that "rhinestoning" is NOT my thing!
Is hand painting on WHITE denim any different?
This was my first time painting on white denim!
To my surprise, other than keeping it clean amongst a heck of a lot of paint, it was really easy to paint on. The colors stayed bright and true without needing to prime the fabric first!
My Secret for Long-Lasting Painted Denim
If you've ever painted on fabric, you know that the most important step comes AFTER the painting is done....the sealing process.
My go-to product for sealing chalk mineral paint on denim, canvas and fabric....is Easy Peasy Spray Wax. It's quick, simple, and provides a protective finish that keeps your artwork flexible and long lasting. It's perfect for wearable art that will see lots of movement and washes.
You can spray it on in light layers.....or pour a small amount into a bowl and actually brush it on (my preferred application).
I usually heat set my art first... because I often use art pens. I simply cover the fabric with a pillowcase and press with a hot iron (no steam). I then apply the Easy Peasy Spray Wax. This liquid immediately soaks into the chalk mineral paint... locking it in forever!!!
