Every few years I feel the need to refresh my hand painted pumpkins.
I also really like to paint my pumpkins in an "evergreen" style ....which for me means I can use them for both Halloween and Thanksgiving!
By keeping the pumpkins (and the pots in which they will sit) painted in a black and white pattern and using other colors to embellish them, these whimsical pumpkin topiaries can easily and affordably be converted from one seasonal decor to the next.

Whimsical Pumpkin Topiary
Starting with the Whimsical Topiary Pots
I decided to start with the pots (aka urn)
The black pot....I used to my advantage....and left the black to be black...no paint required!
I used a white Posca pen to draw out my squares and painted in every other one in Fluff (white) paint.
The chalk mineral paint adheres really well to almost everything.....which allowed me to paint directly on the surface!
Once finished I top coated with Satin Clear Coat for added protection and called it done!
Well that was easy!
Moving on to the Pumpkins!
The largest pumpkin was white and I just painted every other section in Caviar black.
The next pumpkin was black and I traced out polka dots and painted them in with the Fluff white paint.
I painted one more smaller white pumpkin in black checks.....and I left the tiniest pumpkin in its original white.
Just like the pot....I applied a coat of Satin Clear Coat to each one for lasting protection.
Pumpkins are done and set aside to build the convertible foliage.
Creating the Topiary Base
The pot was larger in diameter and I wasn't able to use the grapevine wreath as planned.....the wreath just fell into the pot.
So, I used a styrofoam disc that was large enough to cover the hole of the pot.
I covered the edge of this large white foam disc with an adhesive green moss. I just didn't want any white peeking through.
I then began to build up the foliage.
I used floral pins to apply greenery that would hang from the foam disc....over the sides of the pot. This was just a large green swag that I bought and cut up.
I then secured the large pumpkin in place with hot glue. I had purchased a large Halloween black floral swag and just wrapped it around the bottom pumpkin twice. I used the floral pins to stick it into the foam and hold it in place.
It already looked so good with just these two steps!
From here....I chose from a variety of floral pics such as felt black balls and white velvet sprays. I just applied a small dot of hot glue to the stem and poked the pics right into the foam disc.
I then created a large bow using all black and white ribbon and pinned it in place.
And for the final touch I added a giant skeleton spider! I nestled him in right next to the pretty blow and secured his legs with floral pics.
Assembling the Whimsical Pumpkin Topiary
Now to build the topiary simply by using hot glue and stacking the pre cut holes over the stems of the pumpkins.
So the polka dot glued and stacked onto the large stripe.....the checkered glued and stacked onto the polka dot...and finally the tiny white glued and stacked onto the checked!
And there you have it!!
Converting Whimsical Pumpkin Topiary for the Fall Season
A VERY trendy looking pumpkin topiary that will switch over to Thanksgiving decor by just lifting the pumpkin stack......lifting up the foam disc with black florals....and replacing with the Fall floral wreath that you've already prepared and setting the stack of pumpkins right down into its new fall colored space!
Wasn't that fun???
And it's so easy!
I'll be playing around with these topiaries for a few seasons now!
I could even use these pots for Christmas!
I'd simply remove the pumpkins and fall florals and add Christmas trees and poinsettias!
