Painted Nightstand Makeover: The Most Overlooked Piece in the Bedroom
- 8 hours ago
- 5 min read
These nightstands may be the simplest pieces in this bedroom set… but they might just be the most important.
This painted nightstand makeover was the final step in completing a king bedroom suite that started with a blended blue king-size bed, followed by a large, detailed Alice-inspired dresser. Those two pieces did a lot of the heavy lifting visually — but these nightstands quietly bring everything together.
And honestly?
Nightstands are often the first pieces in a bedroom to show their age. They’re touched daily. They collect rings, water glasses, chargers, books, lamps, and more.
I mean… who’s really doing the heavy lifting here?

If you are a new reader, hello and welcome to the Fancy Fam! With over a decade of furniture painting experience, I can honestly say that sharing my projects through this blog is still my favorite way to inspire! Why a Painted Nightstand Makeover Makes Such a Big Impact
The good news? Nightstands are the easiest pieces to refresh.
They don’t have a ton of surface area.
They don’t require overwhelming prep.

And whether you choose paint, stain, or a mix of both, updating them can completely clean up a bedroom and make everything feel fresh and intentional again.
If the idea of repainting an entire bedroom set feels overwhelming, starting with a painted nightstand makeover is the perfect entry point.

The Prep Work
A good White Lightning shower… always. Followed by a heavy water rinse.

Both nightstands had water damage on the top surface — lifting and flaking paint.

I sanded just those areas. Enough to knock away loose finish and soften the transition lines. See this process in my Instagram Reel HERE.
I then laid down a coat of primer (Bonding Boss) and allowed it to dry.

Because I planned a patterned finish on the top, it works beautifully as a disguise for less-than-perfect surfaces — and it’s more forgiving for a surface that will experience heavy use.

The Body Color & Blended Drawer Fronts
The body of the nightstands is painted in Antebellum Blue.

The drawer fronts are a blend of Antebellum Blue, shaded with In the Navy and highlighted with Savannah Mist.

I use a Big Daddy brush to blend drawer fronts — and it’s genius.
The overall body is paint washed in a very watered-down In the Navy — brushed on and immediately wiped back to expose the Antebellum Blue underneath.

It’s impressive how much this simple paint wash shifts the overall tone.

The Harlequin Patterned Top
The top of this painted nightstand makeover is finished in a tone-on-tone harlequin pattern.
I used Antebellum Blue as the base for one set of diamonds.

The alternating diamonds were painted with a 1:1 blend of Antebellum Blue and Savannah Mist to create a mid-tone blue that still fits within the cool palette — without introducing a new color.

It also ties directly to the stripes on the dresser in this bedroom suite.
I drew out the design using my diamond quilting template — an absolute lifesaver.

The custom blue required two coats per diamond, but the finished look was worth every minute. It offers a grown-up version of whimsy that plays beautifully with the dresser.

Hardware & Finishing Touches
The hardware received a single brushed coat of Silver Gilding Wax — taking it from deep bronze to fresh silver in one simple swipe.

This gilding wax permanently cures and does not require a top coat.
The nightstands were sealed with two coats of Clear Coat Satin to match the sheen of the rest of the suite.
Why You Don’t Have to Paint an Entire Bedroom Set at Once
Painting these nightstands FINALLY reminded me — and hopefully you too — that you don’t have to tackle an entire bedroom set at one time! Even the thought of that can feel overwhelming enough to keep you from starting. Sometimes the smaller pieces are the best place to begin....or the best pieces to save for the end.
Tackling the bedroom set one piece at a time makes it much more enjoyable.....building your confidence along the way!
The painted nightstand makeover is exactly what makes the whole room come together.
FAQ: Painted Nightstand Makeover
Do I need to sand before painting a nightstand? Light sanding is recommended if the surface has damage or peeling finish.
What paint finish is best for nightstands? A satin or matte finish with a durable clear coat works beautifully for high-touch furniture like nightstands.
Can I add a pattern to hide surface damage? Yes! A patterned top, like a harlequin design, is a creative and forgiving way to disguise imperfections.
Is it better to paint the entire bedroom set at once? Not necessarily. Starting with a painted nightstand makeover is often less overwhelming and helps build confidence.
